Term of the Day: Outswept 10/12/09

A 19th-century center table. The legs of this center table are outswept, meaning they are curving outward. This term is most frequently seen describing the legs and feet of a piece of furniture. Outswept legs either can be straight, but angled outward from the main body of the piece of furniture; or, as in the present example, they can curve so that the end of the leg points horizontally and is directed away from the main body. The term can also be used to describe chair arms, vase rims, and other parts of pieces of furniture or decorative objects that curve away from the main body at their ends. Another word for this is outsplayed: the two terms can be used interchangeably.
