An Unexpected Find!

Flipping through the sizable Sotheby’s catalog for the October 5-7, 2010 Chatsworth Attic Sale was a treat in itself:

But to our surprise and great pleasure, we noticed something very familiar in one of the in situ photographs (below). On pages 102 and 103 of the catalog there is a description and view of the Devonshire House Library, “the largest room on the piano nobile apart from the Saloon,” designed by William Kent in the 1730s. The photo, which showcases a number of items in the Chatsworth sale, also features a bergère in the center of the room–identical to a pair of chairs in the Carlton Hobbs Collection!

When we acquired the chairs no provenance was provided. Presumably they were taken from the house when it was demolished in the 1920s, and we are working to confirm that our chairs, (image below) are in fact from Devonshire House.
