Term of the Day: Bombé 1/14/09

A bombé cabinet to a design by Thomas Chippendale

The term "bombé" is used to describe furniture that has a curvaceous frame that bows outward. This characteristic form is seen primarily on commodes and cabinets, and is especially characteristic of French, Dutch, and Venetian design in the mid-18th century. The style can sometimes also be described as an ogee (S-curve) form, but the term “bombé” is used to indicate more exaggerated curves.
