On Tops: Topping Off Our Exhibition

May 19 2009, 1:07pm

Here at Carlton Hobbs we are in the final week of “ON TOPS: An exhibition of rare tabletops from the 2nd century AD to the 19th century,” which closes this Friday, May 22nd.

We have had a great response to the exhibition, thanks in part to this wonderful article by Wendy Moonan in the New York Times: Adorned Tabletops. From the moment the article came out, we’ve had a constant stream of visitors–some so eager to see the tops that they even arrived during the set-up! There was also a lovely feature done on The Magazine Antiques’ website, which you can read here: “Rare Tables are ‘Tops’ at Carlton Hobbs.” Clients from around the globe attended our opening party on May 13th, coming from as far as the West Coast, England, and Belgium.  The event was a huge success and comments from visitors have been extremely positive. The show has been regularly compared to the Metropolitan Museum’s recent Pietre Dure exhibit, but with the added bonus of being able to interact with the tables and materials. Other guests have described the show as a “splendid, gracious and exciting experience… thrilling to see, touch, and discuss…” Time and again it has been pronounced “Extraordinary!” and we’re truly pleased that so many share our view of these precious tops.

We’re so glad that many of you have been able to stop by, and look forward to sharing more of our collection with you in the future!
